"Tell me, you vain professor, when did you shed a tear for the deadness, hardness, unbelief, or earthliness of your heart? Do you think that such an easy religion can save you? OOHHH YESSSS!!
I pray for men called of God, who lay hold of the solemn charge from Paul to Timothy, to "Preach The Word" unwaveringly, with NO compromise of God's word.
Thanks Steve,
The dogpreacher
Amen on those-they were men used mightily by God.
Wide open are the gates of the church today, drawing seekers who are not aware that the narrow gate is still required for those who are willing to sacrifice all to follow Jesus.
Amen.
1 John 3:20 ¶For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
Excellent quotes! Thank you Steve.
Amen! I really liked the Edwards quote. I wish I had more time to read...any suggestions for my first Edwards book?
I agree with cyd -- Religious Affections.
Also, a very good biography of Edwards is by George M. Marsden, I even had Iain Murray recommend it, and he had also written a bio of Edwards!
Also, if you want to read some Flavel, I think 'The Mystery of Providence' is a great read.
A wonderful way to enjoy an Edwards sermon is listening to Max McLean read it. You can Google or iTunes "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" read by Max for a few dollars and you will be ministered to.
I was just with R.C. Sproul last weekend and he carries that same sermon on his site at ligonier.org too.
Hope you take the time to download this classic by Edwards.

Thanks and may we act on it as the late Johnny exhorted us to. Truth, as he said it right.
In a world characterized by self-worship, Robert Murray McCheyne's words could not be more timely. Imagine if someone went to the "church of Oprah Winfrey" and exhorted people to do this very thing...
Here's some of my favorite quotes from edwards. It's weird that when I was young, i thought he was a stuffy guy. This guy had a passion for God that reminds me of someone who really believes in the "Glory of God in the Face of Christ". Actually I might not have a favorite.
Jonathan Edwards : "But Christ Jesus has true excellency, and so great excellency, that when they come to see it they look no further, but the mind rests there. It sees a transcendent glory and an ineffable sweetness in him; it sees that till now it has been pursuing shadows, but that now it has found the substance; that before it had been seeking happiness in the stream, but that now it has found the ocean. The excellency of Christ is an object adequate to the natural cravings of the soul, and is sufficient to fill the capacity. It is an infinite excellency, such an one as the mind desires, in which it can find no bounds; and the more the mind is used to it, the more excellent it appears. Every new discovery makes this beauty appear more ravishing, and the mind sees no end; here is room enough for the mind to go deeper and deeper, and never come to the bottom. The soul is exceedingly ravished when it first looks on this beauty, and it is never weary of it. The mind never has any satiety, but Christ's excellency is always fresh and new, and tends as much to delight, after it has been seen a thousand or ten thousand years, as when it was seen the first moment."
Jonathan Edwards : "The enjoyment of God is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to Heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant experiences here. Fathers and mothers, husbands, wives or children, or the company of earthly friends are but shadows; but God is the substance. These are but scattered beams, but God is the sun. These are but streams. God is the ocean."
I might not have a favorite because most of what I read I like
Did you guys know that J. Edwards family branched out into myriad areas of life to the 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th generation? They were all godly men and women too. He was a good Dad as well as a good preacher. He was indeed real.
I like ta had a cow the other night when PBS made it look like he was a paranoid psycho immersed with fear tendencies. I get tired of that kinda stuff. Satan is clever isn't he?
Brian--
PBS, huh? They tend to do that kind of stuff alot, don't they?
Brian,
I always hate it when they interrupt Sesame Street too.
Those are all graeat quotes, but I like the Manton's the best. There is a proper perspective to the Word.
LOL
Yeah lil gal if I ever want to get irritated I just watch a little PBS or listen to NPR. For some strange reason as much as I hate their rhetoric I find myself drawn back to their greif and falsehoods and things like billions and billions of years ago...add nauseum.
Oh and Jeremy? Theres something about your smiling face and Sesame Street. I dunno, it just got me laughing.
I agree Manton's quote was good.
"Tell me, you vain professor, when did you shed a tear for the deadness, hardness, unbelief, or earthliness of your heart? Do you think that such an easy religion can save you? If so, we may invert Christ's words and say, 'Wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to life, and many there be that go in there.'"

Thanks Steve for the "words of wisdom by men who cut it straight." This particular quote by Flavel speaks volumes to our day. This is precisely what is going on in our day in this battle for truth. Men are inverting the Word of God, broadening the way, and claiming fidelity to scriptural interpretation as they operate from philosophy rather than theology. This truth is clearly seen in the soteriology, ecclesiology, and eschatology of the Purpose-driven, Seeker-sensitive, and Emergent church philosophies - what they are teaching inverts what God has revealed in His Word concerning these areas.
Grace and peace,
Olan
For an initial read of Jonathan Edwards, I strongly suggest the book
"Altogether Lovely," which is a compilation of sermons on the beauty and excellency of Jesus Christ.
