“Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evil doers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation” –1 Peter 2:11-12
Someone sent me this list below on state constitutions that I found very interesting and thought that you would as well. But first, a few preparatory remarks would be in order.
The foundation for the very fabric of our society lies not solely in the rule of law, but in the rule of faith as well. The rule of law, by its very nature, protects and insures the values born out of faith; and faith, due to its very nature abhorres chaos, lawlessness, and injurious living; seeks to honor and protect the rule of law.
Though the times we live in are increasingly hostile to biblical Christianity, what a great opportunity we have to proclaim the glorious good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ and to let our light shine before others who are desperately in need of a Savior.
Therefore, as you pray, may I encourage to pray not for the protection of our religious rights; but to pray for those that God Himself has established, appointed and instituted as "His ministers" for the order and good of society. Pray for all your local, state, and federal authorities that govern our land. Pray that our elected officials would rule with justice, mercy, and sobriety. Pray for fellow-believers in government who have to walk between the tension of political expediency, compromise and biblical authority, that they would fulfill their duty to their constituents, calling, the constitution, and at the same time bring honor and glory to the Lord. Pray that they would have the strength of divine courage to live out convictions of conscience guided by "the word of truth" regardless of outcome or personal erosion to their legislative vocation. To be sure, our hope lies in the reality that God is in control of all things; that the one true Sovereign Judge of all raises men up to positions of authority and power; and brings men down to the valley of their own moorings and lusts; for His own purposes, after the counsel of His own will, for His glory alone, and for His eternal pleasure—-not ours (Cf, 1 Timothy 2:1-5; Romans 13:1-7; 1 Peter 2:13:17).
In light of this being an election season with religious "talk" playing nemesis to party line mantra, surely faith, freedom, family, and fortune will be at the center of the rhetoric. And no issue fuels the pragmatics of legislative design more than that of "the separation of church and state." There is this unexplained mass confusion on what the Founders of our Constitution truly intended in the First Amendment--which says: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Any pedestrian interpretation of that simple and profound statement is obvious and clear. But somewhere along the way our federal courts, including our Supreme Court, have reinterpreted the First Ammendment of the U. S. Constitution to mean that free speech about God, Jesus Christ and the Bible is prohibited on the property of or within the hallowed walls of government. This on the one hand is easily refuted by the simple fact that ALL fifty states acknowledge God in the very first sentences of their state constitutions as well as our own Supreme Court and both House and Senate of Congress; all of which begin their respective sessions with a prayer. Prayer, religious discussion, posting and reading of Scripture, witness of the gospel, etc. is not prohibited by our Constitution. In fact, its very freedom is protected.
Though all of The Founding Fathers were not genuine believers in Jesus Christ, it is obvious that they clearly did NOT intend for America to be founded on the sandy foundations of paganism.
Though I am not in favor of Christians using the legislative process to procure spiritual change, protect religious or promote faith initiatives; I would encourage you to read the following extractions from every states consitution with an informed eye and I think you'll come to the same conclusion that I did, that the cross waves higher than the flag!

But isn't it telling that your title reads "the cross waves higher than the flag," yet none of the state documents you've provided mentions the cross at all, or even Jesus Christ for that matter?
ReplyDeleteThough the times we live in are increasingly hostile to biblical Christianity, what a great opportunity we have to proclaim the glorious good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ and to let our light shine before others who are desperately in need of a Savior.
Yes, Yes! But I don't see the gospel of Jesus Christ being proclaimed in American civil religion either. It is far to controversial and life-changing for politians to find it expedient to thier election chances. I'm not willing to settle for merely a "divine power" left with no meat on its bones.
230 years after our nation's begining we are in dire need of a reformation for sure. I appreciate this post. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteStarting in the pulpits, I would think it needs to begin, then we may see our Lord pour out His mercy and grace on this nation through His Church.
America, America, God shed His grace on Thee.
DanielI fully agree... I guess that is the point. Though the all fifty states do acknowledge a Creator or mention the name of God; they do fall short. I guess I was trying to demonstrate the duplicity that currently is in our nation: they acknowledge God, but will not allow Christian discussion to take place on things pertaining to the rule of law.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your thoughts...
Don Very good thoughts here too brother. Thank you and may the Lord in His divine sovereignty and grace bring a new Reformation to our land.
Steve
I wonder how the Preambles would begin if they were written today? I'm sure my state would have something about civil unions, sandals, liberal political ideology, and maybe something about flannel and Bob Newhart for all the true residents :)
ReplyDeleteThe United States was nevre a Christian nation. It still is not. God can use our freedoms to help with overseas missions, as well as He can use the totalitarianism of China to grow His church. The only nation with which God deal with is Israel, the Jews, but God deals with His church within all countries.
ReplyDeleteAmerica doesn't need repentance or revival, it is not a church. The church needs those things. Like God told Joshua, get up off your face in praying for America and pray for the church, individually and collectively. A revived and Spirit filled church preaching and living the gospel of Jesus Christ will chnage a country dramatically, not any election which is carnal man choosing the Saul of his choice.
In an attempt to make a point as to how many in the small church I pastor have an inflated and irresponsible view of God and America, I proposed this experiment. We have both the "church" flag and the American flag on the platform. I take down the church flag and wait to see how many notice, and how long before someone does. Then I replace the church flag and take down the American flag. I guarantee you someone will be threatening to have me dragged out of the sanctuary in preparation to being tarred and feathered before the day is out. Jesus did not die for America. He died for the elect, who can be found in all corners of the world.
ReplyDeleteThe states that don't mention God specifically, but instead use phrases such as "Supreme Ruler of the Universe," (Wa, Co, Mo,) "Supreme Being," (Ia) "Sovereign Ruler of the Universe," (Me) and "Great Legislator of the Universe" (Ma), were probably referring to Barack Obama.
